چکیده

We present the problem of notation selection in mathematical computing environments. For various reasons, users may require mathematical software to employ different output notations for the same expression in a variety of settings. How this can be managed in a general way is the subject of this report. We describe a software tool that can be configured extensively to allow mathematical packages to provide output according to specified notation preferences. We explore further and ask how the choice of a set of notations can be used to disambiguate mathematical content in a variety of settings. We discuss the cases of mathematical knowledge management and hand-based mathematical input.

Documents with flexible Notation Contexts as Interfaces to Mathematical Knowledge

In this paper we explore the use of documents as interfaces to mathematical knowledge. We propose an augmented document model that facilitates the explication of a document’s notation context, i.e. the selection of appropriate presentations for all symbols in the document. By separating the notation context from the structure and content of a document, we aim at identifying the author’s selecti...

Computation, Mathematical Notation, and Linguistics

Much like ordinary natural languages, most of the mathematical notation we have today has grown up over a long period of time by a kind of natural selection. Occasionally explicit efforts to systematize the notation have been made—though they have been remarkably few and far between. In the late 1600s, Leibniz, for example, was quite concerned with mathematical notation—seeing it as an opportun...

School of Computer Science College of Engineering and Computer Science COMP 8790 - Software Engineering Project User Interface For A High Level Computing Language Final Report

With the growing number of cores in CPUs and the availability of GPUs for computing, high-performance computing has become the mainstream, yet the cost of writing highperformance programs is still high. A potential solution is to separate the descriptions of computation from the implementation. Such a solution allows domain experts to only focus on expressing what needs to be computed rather th...

GOMS Models for Task Analysis

Analyzing a task into Goals, Operators, Methods, and Selection rules (GOMS) is an established method for characterizing a user's procedural knowledge. When combined with additional theoretical mechanisms, the resulting GOMS model provides a way to quantitatively predict human learning and performance for an interface design, in addition to serving as a useful qualitative description of how the ...
